1 Corinthians 3:10-15

You are also God's building. 10 Using the gift that God gave me, I did the work of an expert builder and laid the foundation, and someone else is building on it. But each of you must be careful how you build. 11 For God has already placed Jesus Christ as the one and only foundation, and no other foundation can be laid. 12 Some will use gold or silver or precious stones in building on the foundation; others will use wood or grass or straw. 13 And the quality of each person's work will be seen when the Day of Christ exposes it. For on that Day fire will reveal everyone's work; the fire will test it and show its real quality. 14 If what was built on the foundation survives the fire, the builder will receive a reward. 15 But if your work is burnt up, then you will lose it; but you yourself will be saved, as if you had escaped through the fire.

Last week, I was playing with my three year old the 3 little pigs game. She would build a house out of cushions and coffee tables and I would come and try to blow it down. Then I would chase her and she laughed and laughed.

“Again, Daddy!”

We all know the story and the warning that it carries. It is not just a tale, I have seen too many Christians that were on fire for Jesus in one season fall apart in the next because they build their foundations on the wrong things. It was not that they never loved Jesus or that they did not believe in him. He was just not the foundation of their lives. He was not what everything else rested on. So, when the wind huffed and puffed, it all fell down.

What are your foundations? This would be the thing that if it was shaken, everything else would fall down. It could be reputation, it could be comfort, it could be finances, it could be power or position, it could be friends or family, it could be your dreams and ambitions. These are not necessarily bad things, they are just not strong enough to carry you. When Jesus asks the rich young ruler to give up his money he walks away. Another man is told that he will be homeless. He too decides the cost it too high. Many people rejected Jesus because they were building their lives on something else.

Foundations are incredibly slow to build. They are time consuming, hard work and invisible to everyone else. No one ever stops to admire the foundations of a home, except when that home is left standing while all the others have collapsed. The amazing thing is, that when your foundation is built on Jesus, he is the only thing that can never be taken away from you. He is strong, consistent and reliable. He will never let you fall.

What does this look like for you? How are your foundations? What if it was taken from you would cause your faith to fall apart? What can you do to better strengthen your faith with God and build your life upon the rock?
