1 John 3:11-15
11 For this is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another. 12 Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother’s were righteous.13 Do not be surprised, my brothers and sisters,[b] if the world hates you. 14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love each other. Anyone who does not love remains in death. 15 Anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him.

Since the beginning of time people have been obsessing over love. We write stories, we sing songs, we go to weddings, we love love. This is something inside of each and every one of us that longs to love and to be loved. You can take the whole of scripture and condense it down into two commands, to love God and to love each other. This is the point of today’s passage: your living flows from you loving. It is impossible to live well and to not love. You can get everything that your heart desires but without love it will all be meaningless.

It is when we love one another that we experience life as it was meant to be. This kind of love is not about surrounding yourself with beautiful people or being in environments where everyone agrees. It is deeper than that. It loves others despite their flaws and forgives even when it hurts. This kind of love is not easy but is the path to a full life.

Reflect

  • When was a time that someone showed you undeserved love? How did that affect you.
  • What does it look like to love others well in your circumstances?

Respond

Think of 5 people who are going through difficulties and spend some time praying for them today.

Today, choose someone on that list and do something to turn the love that you feel for them into something practical. It could be as simple as a text or letter, it could be to serve them somehow. Purposefully love someone today
