Matthew 8:23-27

Jesus calms a storm

23 Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. 24 Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”

26 He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.

27 The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”

Who is Jesus? This is the question that the disciples are asking. They began following a great spiritual teacher, however, in this moment as the waves crash over their boat and the wind threatens to overturn them they get a glimpse of his glory. He has power to speak to a storm and even the elements obey him. Jesus’ power reaches far further than they had imagined.

In life, there are moments that feel exactly like this storm, overwhelming and threatening. Where do you look for help when it all feels uncertain? In Psalm 121 it says,

1 I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
    where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord,
    the Maker of heaven and earth.

He will not let your foot slip—
    he who watches over you will not slumber;
indeed, he who watches over Israel
    will neither slumber nor sleep.

The Lord watches over you—
    the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
the sun will not harm you by day,
    nor the moon by night.

The Lord will keep you from all harm—
    he will watch over your life.

If Jesus is with you, then you do not need to fear the storm. If he is worried, then you don’t need to be. If he is not worried, then you don’t need to be. And as he calms the storms, you see a glimpse of his glory.

Reflect

  • Who is Jesus to you?
  • Where have you seen glimpses of glory in your life?
  • What do you need to entrust to Jesus today?

Respond

Pause and pray. Recite the words of the Psalm above as a prayer, recalling specific areas of concern and giving them to Jesus.
